YOUth Review: One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

An eerie grumble—a low, raspy voice echoes throughout the hollow darkness of the depths of Elspeth’s mind. But what is it? And what does it want from her?

One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig is a dark, romantic fantasy novel that dives into the twisted truth of a curse that has bewitched the Kingdom of Blunder. Elspeth finds herself being tormented by the presence of a monster inside her head. She doesn’t know what the Nightmare wants or why he won’t leave her alone, but she notices something strange happens when she calls him for help. One night, while on the forest road, Elspeth finds herself face to face with a crude highwayman—little to her knowledge, this mysterious man will be thrust into her life. As Elspeth gets to know the elusive nephew of the King, Ravyn Yew, Elspeth is pulled into a world of secrets and deception. Something between them begins to spark, but will it foster despite the challenges they will be faced with and the tragedies to come?

The story is quite enthralling; I love the storyline and the dark atmosphere. The tension between Elspeth and Ravyn was riveting—there was never a dull moment between the two of them. I found myself captivated by the Providence cards and all of their whereabouts—especially the Twin Alders—and I cannot wait to discover the truth behind them and the true history that was thought to have been all but forgotten centuries ago.
