I Saw the Tv Glow, written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, is a psychological horror about a boy named Owen and his friend Maddy. They form a close bond over a TV show called The Pink Opaque, which they both relate to because of its characters. Throughout the movie, Owen recounts his teenage years. Owen’s home life isn’t the greatest, so he hangs out with Maddy and watches their favorite TV show during sleepovers. Later, after his friends leave, he discovers something strange about the show, and he tries to deny and struggles to accept a part of himself as the show ends.
The movie has great cinematography, and the vibe of it is reminiscent of old horror shows that were made for kids in the 90s; it’s almost nostalgic. Along with the colouring of each shot, which is amazing to look at. I enjoyed the movie a lot and can really see how it became popular when it was released, as it deals with themes of identity and trying to accept parts of yourself. At first, the movie can be kind of confusing, especially on first watch. The movie doesn’t just jump right at you with the themes and such; the general story it tells makes sense. I believe it is a great movie that handles its themes well in a complex and complete story, which I relate to in certain parts and made me a little emotional. I would recommend it.
