In the novel Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow, Charlie is a teen who is struggling with abuse and self–harm. She finds herself in a mental hospital where she is working towards recovery. She eventually gets released from the hospital expecting to go home with her mother but instead her mothers gets her money and sends her to go live with her close friend Mikey in Phoenix. When she gets there she winds up renting an appartement and getting a dishwashing job at a cafe. Here she meets Riley and they end up in a rocky relationship.
This story follows Charlie's pathway to recovery and the journey it took her to get there. This book is incredibly good but sad. All of Kathleen's works are beautifully written. Despite how sad all of her works are, her works are still so good. I know that they are turning Girl in Pieces into a movie, however, I feel like turning this book into a screen adaptation would be difficult when it comes to the right casting and being able to draw in the viewers. I also feel like people who haven’t read the book will start to romanticize Charlie and Riley’s relationship which should not be the case.
So yes I love this book despite how incredibly sad and heartbreaking it truly is. I think the stories' sadness and themes are what truly makes this book so amazing. I could see why lots of people may not like the story but that is the beauty of it all. I would recommend reading this novel. However it isn’t for everyone.
