Library leadership gathered today to mark the start of construction on new main floor washrooms at Waverley Library, the first visible step in a multi-phase renovation that will transform the branch over the next few years.
The new main floor washrooms are a planned first step in the sequencing of the larger renovation. Once complete, the branch will offer two distinct washroom areas: the new main floor facilities for adult patrons, and the existing lower level washrooms dedicated to families with young children. Completing this work now ensures the branch is ready for the more complex construction phases ahead.
Waverley Library turns 75 this year. The original building opened in 1951 and has served the community through an addition in 1973 and decades of change since. It is now in need of serious structural repairs, including a cracked foundation, a main entrance that does not meet accessibility standards, and a failing elevator. The planned renovation will address all of these issues while also expanding and modernizing the space in ways the community has been asking for.
"It's great to see another piece of the plan become visible," said Richard Togman, CEO of Thunder Bay Public Library. "Waverley has been at the heart of this community for 75 years. Today we’re starting the work that ensures it's ready for the next 75."
Phase 2, the design and planning for the larger transformation, is already underway. Thunder Bay Public Library began working with FormStudio Architects in late 2025. Detailed timelines for Phase 3, the major renovation, are expected to be ready by summer. Phase 3 is currently projected to begin in January 2027 and last 8 to 12 months.
When complete, the renovated Waverley will feature a Children's Library double the size of the current space; an Indigenous Knowledge Centre; five dedicated programming rooms; updated washrooms throughout; improved accessibility, and increased natural light throughout the building.
Thunder Bay Public Library will be hosting public open houses this spring to share the final plans and invite community input. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.
