YOUth Review: The Three Mothers by Anna Malaika Tubbs

The Three Mothers by Anna Malaika Tubbs highlights the daily challenges and risks that Black women faced in world history and how they remained strong and undeterred despite the racist society they were living in. The book specifically focuses on three influential mothers whose stories were hidden from the public for a long time: Alberta King, Louise Little, and Berdis Baldwin. In this non-fiction read, you will learn about the inequitable restrictions that Black individuals had to endure and how they stood up bravely for their rights even in times of uncertainty. While learning about the circumstances of the past, you will also read the stories of these three women and what legendary figures they are in history.

I found that this was quite an eye-opening and heavy read. This book shows how racist and unfair some countries were at this point in history, and I believe that it is important for everyone to know about the mistakes made in history to create a future of equality. However, at some point the book does get confusing since three different lives are happening at the same time. Sometimes I forgot who someone was and had to re-read some pages to clarify for myself. Overall, The Three Mothers was a fascinating and exposing read making it an interesting historical non-fictional book.
