Hours in 2020

Changes to Hours of Operation, effective January 2, 2020

Thunder Bay Public Library is adjusting its hours of operation in January 2020.

Changes to hours of operation are being made at the Library in the new year. These changes are being made to improve service to the public on the weekends, particularly on Sunday.

Weekly hours of service to the community will be increased to 209.5 hours from 206 hours across our four locations, with some adjustments to weekly hours at individual library branches.

Hours of operation effective January 2, 2020 will be:

Brodie

Monday to Wednesday - 9:30 am - 9 pm
Thursday to Sunday - 9:30 am - 5 pm

County Park

Wednesday - 12 - 8 pm
Thursday to Sunday - 9:30 am - 5 pm

Mary J.L. Black

Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday - 9:30 am - 5 pm
Tuesday & Thursday - 1 pm - 9 pm

Waverley

Monday to Thursday - 9:30 am - 9 pm
Friday & Saturday - 9:30 am - 5 pm

Key changes include:

  • 9:30 am opening across the system instead of 10 am openings (this change had already been made at Waverley in 2019).
  • Opening Sundays from 9:30 am - 5 pm at the Brodie Library and the County Park Library (instead of only being open at these locations from 12 - 4 pm)

These decisions were based on a number of factors, including:

  • offering 7 more hours of operation on Sundays at one location on each side of town - hours on Sundays will now be from 9:30 am - 5 pm which will better serve students, researchers and the many people that work from Monday to Friday
  • utilizing staff as efficiently and effectively as possible
  • offering the same level of service during each hour that we are open (for example - phone calls will be answered on Sundays starting in the new year)

There will be no reduction to staff or programming as a result of these changes.

There will be additional changes to hours of operation at Library locations in 2020. Alternatives are being explored to increase hours through the use of technology.
